How to Create and Sell Digital Products (Beginner-Friendly)

Create and design digital products

Many people want to begin their journey to financial freedom by creating some online income streams but feel overwhelmed by complicated business models. Digital products are one of the simplest ways to start.

I’ve built several online shops selling digital downloads—from vintage illustration bundles to printable resources—and one of the biggest surprises is how simple the process can be once you understand the basics.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through:

  • what digital products are
  • how to create them
  • where to sell them
  • how to help people actually find them online (the most important part (IMO)

What Are Digital Products?

Digital products are items people purchase online and download instantly.

Common examples include:

  • Digital art and illustrations
  • Craft templates
  • Worksheets
  • Photography
  • Notion templates
  • Canva templates
  • Educational guides
  • Spreadsheets and trackers
  • Printable planners

One of the biggest benefits is that you create the product once and sell it repeatedly.

Step 1: Choose a Simple Digital Product Idea

The easiest way to start is to create something:

  • useful
  • niche
  • simple

Think about your own interests and areas of expertise. Tap into your own knowledge, someone wants to learn from you!

Some beginner-friendly ideas:

Printable Products

  • planners
  • journaling pages
  • trackers
  • kids activities

Creative Resources

  • clip art
  • digital illustrations
  • scrapbooking ephemera
  • digital stickers

Practical Tools

  • budgeting tools
  • garden planners
  • fitness trackers
  • habit trackers

A good digital product usually solves a small, specific problem. Find more digital product ideas for slow living and witchy folks here.

Examples:

Instead of:
“Fitness planner”

Try:
“12 Week Home Workout Tracker”

Instead of:
“Plant guide”

Try:
“Beginner Guide to Growing and Collecting Exotic Tropical Plants”

Step 2: Create the Digital Product

You don’t need expensive software.

Common tools include:

  • Canva
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Google Sheets

For many beginners, Canva is enough to design printable products and guides.

Export formats usually include:

  • PDF (for printables)
  • PNG (for graphics)
  • JPG (for images)
  • XLSX (for spreadsheets)

Step 3: Where to Sell Digital Products

There are several platforms where digital downloads sell well.

1. Etsy

Etsy is a great start is you don't have an audience. I have made over 3700 sales with Etsy. It's user friendly and scalable, though you pay higher fees for having a ready made platform.

Pros:

  • Built-in traffic
  • Easy setup
  • Large audience for printables and creative downloads

Cons:

  • Listing fees
  • Competition

2. Shopify

Shopify is a great tool that allows you full control over your store. You can start with a free trial while you build your content. It can be pricey after the trial ends so I would recommend building a solid base of content and traffic before launching your Shopify store. Shopify has tools that assist you in importing your Etsy listings.

Pros:

  • Full control of your store
  • Higher profit margins
  • Ability to build your own brand

Cons:

  • You need to drive traffic

3. Gumroad

Pros:

  • Simple setup
  • Built for digital creators

Cons:

  • Smaller marketplace

Many creators start on Etsy for traffic and later add Shopify for brand control.

Step 4: How to SEO Your Digital Products

I think this is your most critical step. You can create beautiful products but no one will find them if you don't drive traffic to your listings. Search engine optimization helps people find your products.

For digital downloads, SEO mainly happens in:

  • product titles
  • descriptions
  • keywords
  • blog posts
  • Pinterest

Focus on Search Intent

People search very specific phrases like:

  • “printable meal planner”
  • “wedding budget spreadsheet”
  • “herbalism journal printable”

Use those phrases in your titles.

Example:

Instead of
“Garden Planner”

Use

“Printable Garden Planner – Vegetable Garden Layout & Planting Tracker”

Step 5: Use Pinterest for Traffic

Pinterest is one of the best platforms for digital products.

Create pins that show:

  • the product
  • how it is used
  • the benefits

Example pin titles:

  • “Printable Garden Planner for Beginners”
  • “Digital Budget Tracker That Actually Works”
  • “10 Digital Products You Can Make in an Afternoon”

Pinterest content can drive traffic for years.

Step 6: Create a Small Funnel

A simple funnel looks like this:

Pinterest → Blog Post → Digital Product

Example:

Pin
“7 Digital Products You Can Make Today”

Blog Post
Explains ideas and includes examples.

Product
Downloadable template.

Final Thoughts

Digital products are one of the most flexible ways to build online income.

They allow you to:

  • work from home, I work on my products while I'm sitting at my kids sports activities.
  • sell globally
  • create once and sell repeatedly

The most important step is simply to start with one small product and improve as you learn
